All the loose threads are tied up, but not always so neatly the four main young women find that life doesn't always give you what you thought you wanted, but you've got to make peace with yourself no matter what. My brain's been on Thanksgiving break! Anyway, below is the review I just posted to Amazon: I actually finished it a couple of days ago but just got around to writing the review tonight. So I skimmed it and went on to one I *really* wanted to read: Splendor by Anna Godbersen. Still, I gave it the ole college try-more than 100 pages and 3 days and still nope, just not into it. She is being haunted by the presence of her own famous literary creation, Rebecca, and also thinks she's being watched by sinister men in trilby hats (her grandfather was George du Maurier who wrote the bestselling novel Trilby, after which the hats were named). Her husband is having a mental breakdown and she's just discovered he's also been having an affair. Daphne is going through a rough patch in her personal life. The novel combines a modern story with a fictionalized account of the period of Daphne du Maurier's life when she was writing The Infernal World of Branwell Bronte, her biography of the tormented, alcoholic brother of Charlotte, Emily and Anne (being Bronte obsessed myself, this was a book I HAD to read). it's not clear when it'll be out in Canada - it's published by Bloomsbury which is changing Canadian distributors shortly. ![]() ![]() I've just finished reading a wonderful novel in this same ve in: Daphne by Justine Picardie (I got my copy from the U.K. ![]() 5/19/2023 0 Comments The emperor of evening stars![]() ![]() In an instant, Des loses everything, and his life becomes newly defined by a quest for revenge. But while those earlier books possess what Emezi calls “a quality of the other” or “a separateness,” the author’s first romance reflects a different voice-one that is truer to their own story of love and heartbreak when they were a 20-something in New York City. Like Emezi’s debut, Freshwater (2018), and their acclaimed, bestselling novel The Death of Vivek Oji (2020), You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty is a bold work of art. The differences between the prize-winning writer’s first romance novel and their previous work go beyond genre boundaries and readers’ expectations.
